Welcome to Ladybirds class page!

 

Our teachers are Mrs Evans and Mrs Lee.

Mrs Heal, Mrs Ahmed and Mrs Amir will also be working in our classroom.

Summer Term 2nd Half 2017

 

Our learning this half term:

 

In English we are learning to:

  • Read and share Fantasy Stories and Poems before writing our own stories / poetry.
  • Develop our sentence writing skills – improving accuracy of full stops, capital letters, questions marks and exclamation marks
  • Improve our use of adjectives in order to write interesting sentences

 

In Mathematics we are learning to:

  • Understand multiplication by finding groups of and understand division by sharing.
  • Improve number fluency – reading and writing numbers, counting on and back in 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s.
  • Add and subtract numbers to twenty including problem solving and reasoning about numbers
  • To compare mass/ weight, capacity/volume, length and height and use our knowledge to solve problems

 

Our Learning Challenge theme is ‘Where do I live?’

 

In Science we will be working scientifically to gather information and data to answer questions. We will revisit ‘materials and their uses’

In D&T we will be designing and making moving pictures.

In Geography the children will be learning about the UK and Blackburn – looking at the town and its old and new buildings

In History we will be finding out about the history of our town.

As Musicians the children will be exploring rhythm and rhyme.

In Computing the children will be learning to control a programmable toy.

In RE our theme is ‘What can stories teach us about life?’

In PSHE our topic is ‘Changing Me’

 

Important Dates:

Wednesday 21th June – Year 1 walk around Blackburn town centre  to support our learning in our ‘Where do I live?’ topic

Wednesday 28th June- Year 1 visit to the Legoland Discovery Centre at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Summer Term 1st Half 2017

In English we are learning to:

  • Write in sentences using capital letters and full stops. We will try to use exclamation marks and question marks too.
  • Use describing words and interesting vocabulary when talking about and describing characters and settings.
  • We will be reading and listening to fairy tales and traditional tales.
  • Perform a poem with help from Mr Simpson

In Maths we are learning to:

  • Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number
  • Read and write numbers to 20 in words and numerals and understand the place value of these numbers
  • Given a number, identify 1 more and 1 less
  • Add and subtract one and two digit numbers to 20
  • Represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20
  • Describe position, direction and movement, including whole, half, quarter and three-quarter turns
  • Count in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s
  • Solve one-step problems involving multiplication and division, by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays with the support of the teacher
  • Our learning challenge question is:
  • What plants grow in a castle garden?
  • In Science we are learning to name common flowers and plants. We are also learning the name and function of different parts of a plant. We will be planting and growing our own beanstalks too.
  • As Artists the children will be looking at the work of Van Gogh and creating their own flower pictures.
  • In History the children will be learning about the Royal family and what succession is.
  • In Computing the children will be creating a talking book for a well-known fairy tale with help from Mrs Mehdikani.

Spring Term 2nd Half 2017

 

Our learning this half term:

 

In English we are learning to:

  • Write in sentences using capital letters and full stops. We will try to use interesting vocabulary too.
  • We will be trying to use ‘and’ in our sentences.
  • We will be reading the story of The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson.
  • We will be sharing other stories and poems written by Julia Donaldson and learning about Julia Donaldson herself.

 

In Mathematics we are learning to:

  • Read and write numbers in figures to 100.
  • Count on and back in multiples of 2, 5 and 10.
  • Division and sharing
  • Measure using non-standard and standard units for weight
  • Use addition and subtraction to 20.
  • Understand fractions – half and quarter.
  • Identify time on an analogue clock to the hour and half hour.

 

Our learning challenge question is:

What do we know about animals?

 

In Science we are learning to name animals, identify their body parts, know what they eat and also name our own body parts and identify our senses.

As Artists the children will be mixing shades and tones of paint to create their own illustrations of the Gruffalo and where it lives

As Musicians the children will be learning a hip hop song.

In Computing the children will be using a paint program on the laptops to create a greetings card

Design & Technology the children will be making and decorating Gruffalo cakes

PE – the children will be working with a gymnastics specialist

Spring Term 1st Half 2017

 

Our learning this half term:

 

In Literacy we are learning to:

  • Use and to add more information to a sentence
  • To share stories from other cultures and write information texts about the Arctic.

 

In Mathematics we are learning to:

  • Count in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s.
  • Find one more and one less
  • Add and subtract one and two digit numbers to 20
  • Find a fraction of a shape or quantity
  • Recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes
  • Recognise and know the value of different denominations of coins and notes
  •  

Our learning challenge question is Why is it cold?

 

In Science we are learning to work scientifically, investigating the changes that take place when liquids are heated and cooled. We will also be finding out about the different animals that live in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

As Artists the children will be mixing and hot and cold colours.

In D&T we will be designing and making our own puppets.

In Geography we are learning about the people who live in cold lands.

As Musicians the children will be using percussion instruments to accompany a song about getting dressed for cold weather.

In Computing the children will be learning how to use the internet to collect and save images.

Our learning this half term:

 

In English we are learning to:

  • Write sentences with capital letters and full stops

  • Share poems and then to write our own

  • Recount our trip to the park

  • Read autumn themed books

 

In Mathematics we are learning to:

  • Count in 2s, 5s and 10s

  • Multiply and divide

  • Talk about and find fractions – half, quarter and whole

  • Identify and count coins

  •  

We have two learning challenge questions:

Who was Guy Fawkes?

Where do all the leaves go?

 

 In Science we are learning about the seasons and how the weather changes with the seasons.

As artists the children will be creating Firework pictures using laptops. They will also be looking at the designs of William Morris before creating some designs of their own.

In History we will be asking Who was Guy Fawkes? We will discover why we celebrate bonfire night.

In Geography Ladybirds and Butterflies will be visiting Corporation Park to look for signs of Autumn and Winter.

As musicians the children will be listening to the music composed by Vivaldi it is called the four seasons.

Year 1 Curriculum Overview

 

Our Learning in Autumn 1 

 

In Literacy we are learning to:

  • Read and perform stories with repetitive patterns
  • Begin to sentences with capital letters and full stops.
  • Talk about the stories we are reading with understanding.

 

In Mathematics we are learning to:

  • Read and write numbers to 50 in figures.
  • Recite numbers forwards and backwards to 100.
  • Recall number bonds for numbers to 10.

 

Our learning challenge questions are about houses & homes.

 

 In Science we are finding out about the different materials (plastic, metal, wood, bricks, glass, fabric, stone, slate) that may be used to build a house. The children will talk about the properties of each material and where it could be used e.g. glass for windows because it is transparent.

As artists the children will be sorting fabrics and threads, before making collages using different shades and textures of paper.

In History we will be asking “Did Granny have an ipad?” We will be looking at artefacts from Blackburn Museum and are planning a visit to discover how objects in our homes have changed in the last 100 years.

We will be designing and then making a chair for Baby Bear in Design and Technology.

Year 1 Homework

  • One piece of maths and one piece of literacy sent home on a Thursday. Please bring completed homework to school on Monday.

  • Home reading – 3 times per week

  • Spellings –  given by your phonics teacher on a Friday and tested the following Friday.
