Year 1 Ladybirds

Welcome to Ladybirds class page!

 

Our teachers are Mrs Evans and Mrs Sargent.

Mrs Heal and Mrs Valley will also be working in our classroom.

Summer Term 2nd Half 2018

 

Our learning this half term:

 

In English we are learning to:

  • Read and share Fantasy Stories and Poems before writing our own stories / poetry.
    • ​​​​​​
  • Develop our sentence writing skills – improving accuracy of full stops, capital letters, questions marks and exclamation marks
  • Improve our use of adjectives in order to write interesting sentences
  • Use and to write more detailed sentences

 

In Mathematics we are learning to:

  • Understand multiplication by finding groups of and understand division by sharing.
  • Improve number fluency – reading and writing numbers, counting on and back in 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s.
  • Add and subtract numbers to twenty including problem solving and reasoning about numbers
  • Identify, name and describe 2d and 3d shapes
  • To compare mass/ weight, capacity/volume, length and height and use our knowledge to solve problems
  • Find a half or quarter of a fraction or amount

 

Across the Curriculum:

In Science we will be basing our work on the theme ‘Holidays’ – for example experimenting with materials to make sunglasses.

In History the children will be learning about Blackburn’s local heroes

As Musicians the children will be exploring rhythm and rhyme.

In Computing the children will be learning to control a programmable toy called a BeeBot

In RE our theme is ‘What can stories teach us about life?’

In PSHE our Jigsaw theme is ‘Changing Me’

Summer Term 1st Half 2018

In English we are learning to:

  • Read, interpret and enjoy fairy tales and traditional tales.
  • Write in sentences using capital letters and full stops. We will try to use exclamation marks and question marks too.
  • Use describing words and interesting vocabulary when talking about and describing characters and settings.
  • Perform a poem with help from Mr Simpson

In Maths we are learning to:

  • Count in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s.
  • Read and write numbers to 20 in words and numerals and understand the place value of these numbers.
  • Find doubles of numbers to ten and add and subtract one and two digit numbers to 20.
  • Represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20.
  • Describe position, direction and movement, including whole, half, quarter and three-quarter turns.
  • Measures height and length, volume and capacity.

Our learning across the curriculum

  • In Geography our learning question is ‘What is it like where we live?’
  • In Science we will be learning about how plants grow and the names of common flowers and plants. We will also learn the name and function of different parts of a plant. We will be planting and growing our own beanstalks too.
  • As Artists the children will be looking at the work of Van Gogh and creating their own flower pictures.
  • In Computing the children will be creating a talking book for a well-known fairy tale.
  • In PSHE our Jigsaw theme is ‘Relationships’.
  • In PE we will be developing our gymnastics skills with help from Catherine Crewe.

Spring Term 2nd Half 2018

 

Our learning this half term:

 

In English we are learning to:

  • Write in sentences using capital letters and full stops. We will try to use interesting vocabulary to describe too.
  • We will be trying to use ‘and’ in our sentences.
  • We will be reading the story of The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson.
  • We will be sharing other stories and poems written by Julia Donaldson and learning about Julia Donaldson herself.

 

In Mathematics we are learning to:

  • Read and write numbers in figures to 100.
  • Count on and back in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s.
  • Multiplying by grouping and dividing by sharing
  • Find addition and subtraction facts of numbers to 20.
  • Understand fractions – half and quarter.

 

Our learning across other areas of the curriculum:

In Geography our theme is ‘What will we see on our journey around the world?’

In Science we are learning about minibeasts – we will identify their body parts, know what they eat and where they live.

As Artists the children will be mixing shades and tones of paint to create their own illustrations of the Gruffalo and where it lives.

As Musicians the children will be learning a hip hop song.

In Computing the children will be using a paint program on the laptops to create a greetings card

Design & Technology the children will be making and decorating Gruffalo cakes

In PE the children will be doing dance with the theme ‘Toy Story’ and working with the gymnastics specialist every other week.

Spring Term 1st Half 2018

Our learning this half term:

In English we are learning to:

  • Write sentences that are grammatically correct by making sure words are in the correct order
  • Use and in our sentences to add interest
  • Read and respond to stories form other cultures

 

In maths we are learning to:

  • Find addition and subtraction facts of numbers to 20
  • Identify patterns of numbers and shapes
  • Identify properties of 3D shapes
  • Count, read and write numbers to 100 and count in multiples of 2, 5 and 10

 

Our Learning Journey question this term is ‘Where do different animals live?’

In Geography we will be going on a journey around the world to learn about it is like where different animals live.

In Science we will be learning about Polar Explorers and what they need to wear in the cold. We will be having a visit from an explorer too!

As artists we will be exploring hot and cold colours in our paintings.

In Design and Technology we will be designing and making an animal hand puppet

Our Jigsaw theme is ‘Dreams and Goals’ and our RE theme is Christianity

In PE a gymnastics specialist will be working with us 

Autumn Term 2nd Half 2017

 

Our learning this half term:

 

In Literacy we are learning to:

  • Write with capital letters and full stops and use adjectives to add interest.
  • Share, read and write poems on a theme – fireworks and autumn
  • Orally retell a story using time openers such as first, then , next etc

 

In Mathematics we are learning to:

  • Identify patterns of numbers and shapes
  • Understand and use position and direction language
  • Talk about and find fractions – half, quarter and whole
  • Count in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s

 

In Science and Geography we are learning about the weather and how it changes with the seasons. Ladybirds and Butterflies will be visiting Corporation Park to look for signs of autumn and winter. In Science we will also learn about different materials through the theme ‘Celebrations’

As artists the children will be creating firework and autumn themed pictures using different media, ipads/laptops.

In History we will be asking ‘Why do we remember the 5th of November?’ We will discover why we celebrate bonfire night.

As musicians the children will be listening to and learning about a piece of music called ‘The four seasons’ composed by Vivaldi.

Tuesday 21st November - Visit to Corporation Park in the morning.

Autumn Term 1st half 2017

 

In English we are learning to:

  • Read and perform stories with repetitive patterns.
  • Begin to write sentences with capital letters and full stops.
  • Talk about the stories we are reading with understanding.

 

In Mathematics we are learning to:

  • Read and write numbers to 20.
  • Recite numbers forwards and backwards to 50.
  • Recall addition and subtraction facts for each number up to 10.

 

 

Our learning challenge questions are about houses & homes

 

 In Science we are learning about our bodies and senses and will be finding out about the different materials (plastic, metal, wood, etc) that may be used to build a house.

As artists the children will be sorting fabrics and threads, before making collages using different shades and textures of paper.

In History we will be asking "What was life like when our grandparents were children?” We will be looking at artefacts from Blackburn Museum and are planning a visit to discover how objects in our homes have changed in the last 100 years.

Year 1 Homework

  • One piece of maths and one piece of literacy sent home on a Thursday. Please bring completed homework to school on Monday.

  • Home reading – 3 times per week

  • Spellings –  given by your phonics teacher on a Friday and tested the following Friday.
