Computing Statement of Intent

We follow the Junior Jam scheme of work. The intent to not only educate pupils how to use technology in an academic way, but also to prepare them for using it outside of school.

Lessons are designed to teach the whole computing curriculum from Reception to Year 6. This is done by combining the computing curriculum with a wide range of media subjects to inspire pupils in a topic they may not have done before. It is our hope that educating pupils in topics such as music production or stop motion animation will develop new interests for them.

We want to ensure that pupils cover all the national curriculum points and achieve progress using different aspects of technology and computing safely and with a deep understanding. To be able to do this, the curriculum for computing spans the school career of a child. This can be evidenced in progression maps.

To ensure that the curriculum is progressive and differentiated from year group to year group, the curriculum is designed so that each year is placed on a specific level. Lesson plans are designed with this intent in mind and targeted the learning at that specific year group.

Lessons are taught weekly for 45 minutes to 1 hour.  

The aim is that any child who has undertaken lessons will leave with confidence in their use of technology and the knowledge on how to use it safely.

Children in Years 1 to 6, are assessed by their specialist instructor for each unit of work as a part of the Junior Jam Computing program and class teachers are sent the assessment data.

The subject leader observes teaching of computing by Junior Jam and moderates class assessment data on a half termly basis and ensures the class data is available to class teachers. This helps to create a ‘plan of action’ and make targets for the future.

As pupils prepare to leave St Michael with St Johns CE Primary School, they will have been prepared with the skills to continually advance themselves in the technological and IT based society we live in. Pupils will draw on their Computing knowledge in real life situations, increasing their confidence, further equipping them to achieve in their future.
