Nurture, Inspire, Achieve!

Year 6 Prefects

Welcome to the Year 6 Prefects page!

What is the Role of a Prefect?

Prefects are a group of our Year 6 pupils, who have the exciting role of being pupil leaders in school. Prefects are expected to take their role seriously and must lead by example at all times. They are to have exemplary behaviour and good manners (following our school and class rules); they must wear the correct school uniform and have excellent punctuality and attendance. Ultimately, they are representing our school at all times.

Prefects are expected to promote our school motto and vision to their peers and younger pupils:

'Nurture, Inspire and Achieve'

'With God all things are possible'

The day to day responsibilities of a Prefect are varied and may include the following tasks:

  • assisting staff around our school;

  • showing visitors around our school;

  • working with classes during wet break times;

  • greeting children at the beginning of each day;

  • leading Superstars celebration Collective Worship at the end of each week.

Prefects are given a timetable of their responsibilities and they are accountable for ensuring they are in the correct place at the correct time. In addition to this, they will be expected to attend meetings regularly with members of staff.

Prefects are awarded with a Prefect badge, so that pupils can easily identify them when they are moving around our school. Pupils may choose to seek advice and support from our Prefects, so it is vital that our pupil leaders are kind, empathetic, mature and good communicators.

How Are Our Prefects Chosen?

At the beginning of the academic year, our Year 6 pupils are given the opportunity to apply to be a Prefect. If they would like to be considered for this pupil leadership role, they are asked to write a letter of application. These letters, along with each pupils' behaviour and their attitude towards their learning throughout their time at SMSJ, are considered carefully by staff when selecting pupils.
