Welcome to the Year 1 Starfish Page!
My name is Miss Umerji and I am delighted to be teaching the Year 1 Starfish this year. Mrs Patel and Mrs Ahmed will also be helping us in Year 1. At the bottom of our class page, you will find lots of important information such as our class bulletin, homework grid, curriculum overview and lots of useful websites to support learning.
Important Reminders
* PE - Our PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Please arrive to school in full PE kit on these days!
* School Library - We are timetabled to visit the school library every Wednesday lunchtime. Don't forget to pick up a loyalty card for the chance to win a new book from the SMSJ bookshop!
* Homework is given out every Wednesday and should be returned on Monday. All children have a homework book with a homework grid for the half term. Homework includes: home reading (3 parent signatures required), spellings (test every Monday), a Maths activity, key vocabulary to learn from their knowledge organiser and one other piece to be completed based on our topic for the half term.

We are beginning the half term exploring the traditional tale 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The children will end this unit writing their own innovative version of this story. Then we will move on to non-fiction texts such as a recount. The children will be writing a recount of a memory that really stands out to them.

This half term, we will be learning...
English
We are beginning the half term exploring the story ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. The children will be writing their own innovative version of the story! Then we will be learning about non-chronological reports and the children will write their own report.
Maths
This half term we will be covering the following areas:
- Number – Place Value (within 10)
- Addition and Subtraction (within 10)
Morning Tasks
Every morning from 8:40 - 8:50, children get the opportunity to consolidate their Maths skills and learn new skills by completing a 'Flashback 4' Maths activity. Within this activity they will answer questions, which increases their knowledge and confidence. They will also learn the 'Word of the Day' and it's meaning, really broadening their vocabulary from 9:05-9:15. The children will use their knowledge of the word to create their own sentence. At the end of the week the best sentence will get a little word ninja certificate!
Geography
We will be exploring hot and cold places in the world. We will be looking at the continents and oceans and finding out lots of amazing facts about them!
Science
We will be focusing on animals. We will be looking at a variety of animals, their structures and what they need in order to survive. We will be learning lots of amazing vocabulary in order to identify and categorise lots of different animals. Have a look at our Knowledge Organiser at the bottom of this page to gain more of an insight on what the children will be learning!
RE
We will be focusing on the question 'What it means to belong to a faith community?'
