Curriculum Intent Statement

At St Michael with St John CE Primary School, our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all pupils from our diverse heritage groups, preparing them as fully as possible for their next phase of education.  The majority of our pupils have English as an additional language and therefore, oracy and language development are at the forefront of our school life.

We inspire pupils to have a deep enjoyment of learning through our rich and carefully sequenced curriculum provision. We equip our pupils with essential skills and knowledge, with a strong emphasis on language and communication, that enables them to access our broad and rich curriculum.

Our curriculum is tailored to maximise pupils’ interest and curiosity for learning.  We provide a variety of first hand experiences to stimulate learning, placing a strong focus on the independent application of the essential skills and new vocabulary taught across the curriculum.  Throughout all of our teaching, children are taught and exposed to a wide range of subject specific vocabulary.  Through our immersive styles of teaching, all children are expected to use and apply their developing spoken and written language across all areas of the curriculum. This ensures that all pupils, especially the many who arrive at our school with little or no English, leave us fully able to do so.

Our school community understands the importance of consistency of expectations to ensure every child succeeds.  As a result, our pupils develop essential life skills such as resilience, collaboration and independence that enables them to gain the most from all subjects.  Christian Values, British Values and our PSHE curriculum underpin school life and we nurture the spiritual, cultural and moral development of our pupils so that they become well-rounded and confident individuals who impact positively on society.  Our school also offers an extensive range of extra-curricular activities under the umbrella of the Children’s University.  This is a national programme through which children are provided with opportunities to engage in innovative learning activities and experience university life from a young age.

Please see below for subject specific curriculum information.  If you have any questions regarding the curriculum we teach please contact the school directly.
