Oracy in Music
How we develop oracy through music at St Michaels with St Johns
Oracy is nurtured powerfully through primary music, where singing, listening and performing all support the development of confident, articulate communicators.
In Early Years, Literacy Counts makes purposeful use of songs to teach story structure, helping children internalise narrative patterns through rhythm, rhyme and repetition.
Across the primary years, music-making encourages pupils to experiment with vocal expression, develop clear diction, listen attentively to others, and collaborate through shared performance. By engaging with lyrics, responding to musical cues, and discussing their creative choices, children strengthen both their spoken language skills and their ability to communicate meaning effectively.
Through these interconnected experiences, music becomes a rich vehicle for developing oracy throughout the primary curriculum.
