EAL (English as an Additional Language)

EAL (English as an Additional Language)

At St Michael with St John, we celebrate the fact that many of our children speak more than one language. Pupils who are new to the country and speak little or no English are supported to learn the language through a nurturing and caring approach. This support is provided in class through adapted tasks and where possible, through the additional support from a teaching assistant. This is further supplemented by a daily language session in which a specific programme to teach English is delivered. The progress of pupils with EAL is monitored to ensure there are no underlying learning difficulties which may affect their ability to acquire a competent command of the English language and learning in relation to the curriculum.
