Nurture, Inspire, Achieve!

Year 2

Year 2 Rationale

The Art and Design Curriculum in Year 2 expands and builds upon the pupil’s’s skill base and knowledge of great artists, craft makers and designers from Year 1. Artists studied include LS Lowry, Keith Haring, Jayne Huskisson, Abigail Mill and Serena Hall. Pupils will be challenged to identify and describe artist’s similarities and differences in their individual creations and techniques used. Pupils in Year 2 also begin to develop an awareness and understanding of the historical and cultural development within different Art forms. Most specifically, pupils are taught to use the work of identified artists as a starting point to then develop their own creative ideas and models, rather than imitating such work. Each unit of work allows for the further development of drawing, painting and craft techniques with increasing levels of accuracy and an awareness of scale. Specific new areas that the pupils will apply their existing art skill set to are the world of three dimensional sculpture and textiles. Pupil’s’s artistic vocabulary continues to expand from Year 1 into Year 2 as they continue to evaluate their own work giving advice to their peers in a coherent and structured manner.
