Reception Rationale

Through Expressive Arts and Design pupils are encouraged to explore, play and become increasingly more independent with a wide range of media and materials. Pupils are taught how to safely use a variety of tools and techniques to explore the worlds of colour, design, texture, form and function. Using their fine and gross motor skills pupils then are able to design their own pieces of Art work that shows an intended purpose that has been planned for.

They are further provided with opportunities to be imaginative. Pupils are encouraged to use what they have learnt about media and materials in original and experimental ways. They develop their awareness of their own thoughts and feelings, representing through the implementation of different tools and techniques for an intended purpose. This allows the pupils to take ownership of their own artistic creations, discussing their learning and design experience. They then begin thinking independently about the different uses and purposes of different materials and media.
